Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about planning your paint colors with Colorplan.

What is Colorplan?

Colorplan is a free online tool for planning your whole-house paint color palette. You can organize colors room by room, choose from major paint brands, visualize your choices, estimate paint quantities and costs, and share your plan with contractors or family.

Which paint brands are supported?

Colorplan includes colors from Benjamin Moore, Sherwin-Williams, Farrow & Ball, and Behr. Each brand's full color catalog is available, including popular collections like Benjamin Moore's Off-White Collection and Color Preview.

Is Colorplan free to use?

Yes, Colorplan is completely free. You can create plans, save them, share them, and print them at no cost.

Do I need an account to use Colorplan?

You can start building a plan without an account. Sign in with your email to save your plan, get a shareable link, and access it from any device.

How do I share my plan with a contractor?

Every saved plan gets a unique URL you can share with anyone. They'll see a read-only view of your full plan. You can also use the "Print" button for a detailed printout, or "Quick Ref" for a compact table that fits on one page — ideal for job sites.

Can I print my color plan?

Yes. Each plan has two print options: the full "Print" view shows each room with its color harmony strip, surface details (color name, code, brand, product line, sheen), paint estimates, and notes. The "Quick Ref" view is a dense table — one row per room — designed for a contractor's clipboard.

What can I specify for each room?

For each room you can set wall, ceiling, and trim colors — each with its own brand, sheen, and product line. You can also add extra elements like doors, cabinets, closets, accent walls, wainscoting, built-ins, shutters, and windows. There are fields for floor type, square footage, and notes.

How do paint quantity estimates work?

Enter the square footage for a room and Colorplan estimates the gallons needed for walls (2 coats), ceiling (1 coat), and trim (2 coats), based on standard coverage rates. It also estimates cost using average retail prices per brand.

What is the moodboard feature?

Each room has an interactive moodboard canvas where you can upload inspiration images, add shapes and text, and arrange elements. Room colors are auto-seeded as colored rectangles so you can visualize how they work together.

Can I compare colors side by side?

Yes. The Color Comparison tool at colorplan.design/compare lets you place 2–5 colors side by side with a wall preview strip and a detailed table comparing HEX, RGB, HSL, LRV, family, and brand.

Can I invite collaborators to my plan?

Yes. Plan owners can invite other users by email. Collaborators get full edit access to the plan, so you can work on color choices together with a partner, designer, or contractor.

What is the House Palette view?

The House Palette groups all colors used across your entire plan, sorted by how many rooms use each color. You can filter by surface type (Walls, Ceiling, Trim, Extras) to quickly see, for example, which ceiling color is used in every room. Expanding a color shows the product line, sheen, and which rooms use it.

Does Colorplan work on mobile?

Yes. The interface is responsive and works on phones and tablets, though the full editing experience is best on a laptop or desktop screen.

How do I get AI color suggestions?

When creating a plan, describe your style or preferences and Colorplan can suggest a coordinated palette using AI. You can accept, modify, or replace any suggested colors.
